The Royal Luncheon Menu
A menu for 'The Royal Luncheon' held on Tuesday 21 June 1887 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee.
After the death of her husband Prince Albert in 1861 the Queen cancelled her Silver Jubillee in 1862 and made few public appearances thereafter. Her Golden Jubillee was therefore imbued with much significance and this dinner was one of a number of celebrations that took place that day.
The menu appears to be divided into three courses, main, side table and dessert,. Food available for the main included Les OEufs de Pluviers, La Mayonnaise de Volaille, and La Longe de Veau, Pointes d'Asperges. For desert guests were offered Les Gateaux Genois au Kirsch, Les Gelees d'Eau de Vie de Dantzig and Les Souffles a l'Orange, and from the side table they might choose from Cold Beef, Tongue and Cold Fowl.
