Mat, prayer mat
This prayer mat depicts the London Central Mosque in Regent's Park. In the middle is a compass which indicates the direction of Makkah, the holy city which Muslims face when they pray. The Islamic Cultural Centre at the London Central Mosque donated this mat to the Museum, accompanied by the statement: 'Muslims can pray anywhere, so long as the area that they stand on is clean. This is why they all own a prayer mat.'
