V-1 flying bomb over St Paul's Cathedral
St. Paul's with V-1 'flying bomb' overhead.
The V-1 (Vergeltungswaffe 1, 'Retaliation Weapon' 1), also called the Doodlebug or Buzz Bomb, because of its droning engine sound, was first used against London on 13 June 1944.on 13 June 1944. An early cruise missile, carrying a ton of high-explosive, it was designed to fly a preset distance before plunging to the ground. Frequently, this caused the engine to cut out. The sudden silence following a V-1 flight caused panic amongst those waiting for the impact.
