City bomb damage, Bank Underground Station during the blitz
This photograph shows damage caused by a bomb that exploded in front of the Royal Exchange on the night of 10 January 1941. The bomb fell right through to the booking hall of the Bank Underground station leaving a massive crater at the point where seven main roads had met. Fifty Londoners sheltering in the station tunnels & platforms were instantly killed. But, within three weeks the crater was cleared and spanned by a temporary steel bridge built by the Royal Engineers.
The photo was taken the morning after the bomb fell by Police Officers Arthur Cross and Fred Tibbs.
