Printed Ephemera — C. 1890
Poster
Colour chromolithographed poster promoting the Theatre of Mysteries at the Egyptian Hall, Piccadilly.
The Theatre of Mysteries was established at the Egyptian Hall Piccadilly in 1873 by the illusionist John Neville Maskelyne and George A Cook. The shows performed at the Theatre blended comedy, illusion and conjuring tricks and Maskelyne & Cook were billed as ‘Royal Illusionists and Anti-Spiritualists’ with reference to their earlier exposure of the American Davenport brothers as fraudulent spiritualists.
