Printed Ephemera — 1902-1908
Peek Frean Trade Card
This set of advertisements or trade cards was distributed by Peek Frean's Biscuit Manufacturers. On the first a message is written in freehand 'This young man has found something worth having & he's going to take it home. Would you like to know what it is? Look out for the postman this day week'. The note refers to the postal delivery of a tin of Peek Frean biscuits documented in the second and third cards.
James Peak and George Hender Frean provided a major source of employment for the communities of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe when it moved its biscuit factory to the area in 1866. Until the factory closed in 1989, Bermondsey was often referred to as 'Biscuit Town'.
Famous Peek Frean biscuits include the Garibaldi, the Chocolate Table (the first chocolate-coated biscuit) and the Bourbon, which was invented two years after this advert was produced.
