Printed Ephemera — C. 1890
Cut-out
This cut out illustrates Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their son the Prince of Wales on a balcony at Buckingham Palace. The Prince of Wales is wearing a military uniform. They are bidding a ceremonial farewell to the Guards departing for the Crimean War in April 1854. The artist has added a note of sentimentality by depicting Victoria holding a handkerchief.
Victoria cast herself in the role of commander-in-chief of Britain's armed forces and took part in numerous martial ceremonies for soldiers and sailors as they left for the Crimea. The queen took a keen interest in the military campaign and was fervent in her enthusiasm for the war. She suggested the motto 'For Valour' for the Victoria Cross, Britain's highest decoration for bravery, which was first awarded during the Crimean War.
