Bluegate fields
An illustration of Bluegate Fields near Ratcliff Highway, from 'London: a Pilgrimage' by Blanchard Jerrold and Gustave Doré, 1872. Jerrold describes visiting Bluegate Fields, under the protection of policemen, 'where in open doorways low-browed ruffians and women who emphasize even their endearments with an oath, scowl at us in threatening groups as we pass, keeping carefully in the middle of the road. "Stick close together, gentlemen; this is a very rough part," our careful guides tell us'.
