The bull's-eye
An illustration from 'London: a Pilgrimage' by Blanchard Jerrold and Gustave Doré, 1872. In order to visit the East End at night, Jerrold and Doré dressed in 'rough clothes' and went out with members of the police force. In this illustration a policeman is shining his 'bull's eye' on a group of impoverished Londoners. Police night patrols were issued with a simple oil lamp with a bull's-eye lens and at the time Jerrold was writing these lamps were made by Hiatt & Co. of Birmingham.
