Whitechapel refreshments
An illustration from 'London: a Pilgrimage' by Blanchard Jerrold and Gustave Doré, 1872, showing a street vendor in Whitechapel. While on a tour round the East End, accompanied by Sergeant Meiklejohn, Jerrold and Doré 'paused before a crowd, grouped round a baked potato vendor. "Those," said my knowing companion, "are only poor: not thieves." God help them: and keep them clear of Newgate's lock and key.'
