The noble art
An illustration of a boxing match taking place in a booth at the Derby, from the book 'London: a Pilgrimage' by Blanchard Jerrold and Gustave Doré, 1872. Jerrold writes of the preparations taking place during the day before the Derby, which include the actions of 'thick-throated fighting-men who ... put on the gloves, for shillings'. The wearing of boxing gloves, as seen in this image, had been declared mandatory under the Marquess of Queensberry rules introduced in 1867.
