Social History — 1948
Medal & case
Bronze medal designed for the 1948 London Olympic Games. The medal is from a set of surplus medals given to the London Museum by the organising comitee at the end of the games: ‘they are not souvenirs which we wish to fall into the hands of people who can lay no claim to them’ they explained. The basic design by the Florentine sculptor Giuseppe Cassioli, had ben used for all Olympic prize medals since 1928. It shows the goddess Nike on one side and a triumphant victor on the other. The medals were made by the London firm, John Pinches.
