Proclamation
This proclamation, given by King Charles II on 13 September 1666, declares that there will be a national fast on Wednesday 10 October to commemorate the Great Fire of London. People across England and Wales were asked to beg God's forgiveness for their sins, which had caused God to punish them with the fire.
They were also asked to donate money to a relief fund for 'poor Sufferers by this fire'. The fund was to be administered by the Lord Mayor and the City of London and payments made to those most in need of help. The proclamation sets out clearly the desperate situation - 'many Persons and families are now become great objects of Charity themselves, having not only lost all they had by fire, but being destitute of all habitation.'
