Printed Ephemera — 1993-1994
Imagine this place as a home, a wood, or the M11 Link Road
This postcard was produced in 1993 as part of the protest against the building of the Hackney-to-M11 link road. The postcard shows the beginning of the construction of the link road. On the back is printed 'Some things are more important than 7 minutes saved on a car journey. Say No To The M11 Link'.
The ‘no M11 link campaign’ was formed to fight the demolition of houses in Leytonstone and Wanstead which stood in the way of a new motorway link road. The road was to join the Essex end of the M11 with the A12 at Hackney Wick.
The final stages of the ‘battle‘ in December 1994, saw campaigners occupy the condemned properties, defying eviction and declaring the independence of the states of Leytonstonia and Wanstonia. The protest failed to halt construction of the M11 Link road which finally opened in 1999.
