Social History — 1989-1993
Badge, lapel badge
Oxleas Wood is an ancient woodland area covering approximately 77 hectares at Shooter's Hill in South London. In the early 1990s the Conservative government planned to build a road through Oxleas Wood and Plumstead to create an East London River Crossing. These plans, part of the government's 'Roads for Prosperity' building programme, aroused significant local opposition. Campaigning groups, such as People Against the River Crossing, sprung up and public opposition forced the government to abandon its plans in 1993.
