Printed Ephemera — 1850-1872
Mr Smith as the Pirate, or the Black Sea
Handcoloured theatrical souvenir print engraved with a portrait of the actor Mr Smith in the role of The Pirate. The portrait is embellished with metal foil tinsel ornaments notably on the armour and dress accessories. The clothing is of cotton and silk. The portrait has been cut from a paper sheet and mounted on card handcoloured with background scenery of a pirate battle. Such portraits would have been sold plain for colouring and tinselling at home. Beneath the title this portrait reads 'Coloured and sold wholeale and retail by J. Redington at his Theatrical Print, Play and Tinsel Warehouse, 208 Hoxton old town and Jonathan King, 45, Chapel St. Somers Town'.
