Printed Ephemera — 1845-1880
Card, valentine card
Valentine's card with silver lace paper border and plain rectangular shaped central panel printed 'Dearest, this plain gold ring I send, Oh, say you'll share my home; I'll guide and love thee, and defend the Gem I wish to own.' Also decorated with a garland of embossed and coloured paper flowers representing a ring.
The introduction of the penny post in 1840 meant sending cards became easier and cheaper. A thriving business developed in central London producing cards and card components. This card was originally in the collection of Jonathan King, a stationer and newsagent who ran his own business making cards on Essex Road.
