Printed Ephemera — 1850-1890
A forethought after wedlock
Valentine's card with embossed flower border and curved edging coloured blue. In the centre is painted a washing line, attached to which are items of clothing made of white cotton. A verse in blue above and below the line reads 'A forethought after wedlock' and ' Useful Articles for the Little Stranger' with the rhymes ' Against the little event takes place To do my best I've tried And sent some little patterns, That are ready cut and dried.'
The introduction of the penny post in 1840 meant sending cards became easier and cheaper. A thriving business developed in central London producing cards and card components. This card was originally in the collection of Jonathan King, a stationer and newsagent who ran his own business making cards on Essex Road.
