Printed Ephemera — 1830-1860
Tinsel print
Handcoloured theatrical souvenir portrait plate printed with an engraving of an unnamed actor on horseback in character role. The portrait has been cut out from a paper sheet and stuck onto cardboard handcoloured with background scenery. The portrait is embellished with metal foil tinsel ornaments notably on the character's weapons, horse livery and dress accessories. The clothing is of silk and cotton. Such portraits would have been sold plain as theatrical souvenirs for colouring and tinselling at home.
