Printed Ephemera — 1850-1872
Tinsel print
Unfinished tinsel portrait of an unidentifiable actor in a theatrical role. The portrait has been cut from a larger sheet and stuck on a piece of paper. The coat and buckles are embellished with metal foil tinsel ornaments and the coat is made from red silk. The trousers are made from a cotton and the boots are of black card. Decorating such portraits was a popular pasttime and pre-cut tinsel pieces would have been sold alongside printed portraits for colouring and tinselling at home.
