Printed Ephemera — 1850-1872
Mr Grimaldi as Clown
Hand-coloured theatrical souvenir plate printed with an engraving of Grimaldi as Clown. Published by Redington. Such portraits would have been sold plain as theatrical souvenirs for colouring and tinselling at home. Grimaldi is credited with having invented the whiteface style for clowns, in his role in the conventional pantomimes that were popular in London's theatres.
