Printed Ephemera — 1908
Olympic Games in the Great Stadium
Leaflet for the 1908 Olympic Games, held in London.
The White City stadium was built as part of the Franco-British exhibition. Between 13 and 25 July 1908 it was the main venue for the 1908 Olympic Games. Events hosted in the stadium included athletics, fencing, swimming, gymnastics, wrestling, football, hockey, rugby and lacrosse. The arena could accomodate over 60,000 spectactors, nearly 20,000 of whom enjoyed undercover seating. Just over 2000 competitors from 22 national teams took part. This was the first games to award gold, silver and bronze medals, and the first in which all entrants had to compete as members of national teams rather than as individuals.
