Frost Fair; or John Bull on the Thames
Letterpress broadside ballad commemorating the winter frost fairs held annually on the River Thames in the early 19th century. . The paper is printed with a verse entitled 'Frost Fair; or John Bull on the Thames' giving an account of the fair.
Although frost fair ballads were often printed on printing presses set up on the frozen ice this example was printed by John Pitts at his business premises in Seven Dials. Although undated it is possible the ballad commemorates the famous fair of 1814 that lasted several days due to the severe frosts and heavy snow that fell in February that year.
