Printed Ephemera — 1827-1843
Bill, flyer
Bill or flyer announcing the opening hours of the Thames Tunnel to members of the public. The bill dates from the period when the tunnel was under construction and members of the public could pay a shilling to view the progress of the works. The bill is engraved with three illustrations showing the completed tunnel from the Thames, the interior of the tunnel and a depiction of the construction workers. The bill is also printed with a map showing potential visitors how to reach the Tunnel. During its 18 year construction the Tunnel became one of the most popular visitor attractions in London. It was open to the public Monday to Saturday from 7am to 8pm.
