Cheque
Cheque issued by the banker Coutts & Company from the bank account of Charles Dickens. Dated 21 February 1862, and signed by the author the cheque refers to the payment of £24. 8. 6. for goods purchased by the author from the jewellers Hunt and Roskell. The date of the purchase being close to Ellen Ternan's birthday it is possible the payment refers to a gift purchased by Dickens for his mistress. He bought many items of jewellery for her over the years including a gold watch-chain, charms and a seal engraved ‘Ellen’.
