Archaeology — Middle Saxon; mid-9th century
Copper, copper alloy, coin, styca
Coin from a hoard of 22 small coins. This type of coin is called a 'styca', and was issued by the kings of Northumbria. The hoard was buried in Lundenwic at about the time of the Viking raid in 851. Perhaps they belonged to a traveller from Northumbria who was caught up in the attack. From the Royal Opera House site, Covent Garden.
Moneyers: Edelher/Odilo. One side: +EDELHER, round central cross of five pellets. Other side: +ODILO, round central cross.
