Printed Ephemera — 1908
Mary Leigh and Edith New released from Holloway
Mary Leigh and Edith New, the first suffragette window smashers, after their release from Holloway prison, 22nd August 1908. On 30th June 1908, enraged by witnessing 'violence and indeceny' inficted on Suffragettes by the police in Parliament Square, Mary Leigh and Edith New went to 10 Downing Street and threw stones at a window, this being the first act of physical militancy carried out by Suffragettes. On their release from prison after serving two months they were greeted by a delegation of fellow Suffragettes that included Christabel Pankhurst. Presented with purple, white and green bouquets they were conducted to a waiting carriage. Here they can be seen in the carriage holding aloft loaves of bread smuggled out of the prison.
