Christabel Pankhurst in Paris, September 1912
Christabel Pankhurst in Paris, September 1912. The image showing Christabel ironically walking past a policeman along the Rue de Montmartre was published in the 20th September edition of Votes for Women six months after she had fled to France to evade arrest. Christabel lay 'under cover' until September when her whereabouts were dramatically revealed in the Votes for Women newspaper of 13th September in an illustrated article headed 'The Elusive One in Exile'. The accompanying article reassured its readers of Christabel's continuing leadership of the Women's Social and Political Union and condemned her critics who mocked her for evading her responsibilities as 'contemptible'. This image was one of several showing Christabel walking freely through Paris published in the newspaper the following week.
