Prehistoric — Middle Iron Age
Dagger, sheath
This iron dagger has a broad blade bound with bronze strips. It was dredged from the Thames at Mortlake. The iron dagger is of a type known in southern Germany and Austria, and must have been imported into Britain some time around the 6th century BC. However, the bronze bands of the sheath, and the loops for hanging the dagger from the wearer's belt, are clearly the work of a British armourer. Six daggers of the same style have now been found, mostly in the London area.
