London: a Pilgrimage
'London: a Pilgrimage' was a collaboration between the journalist Blanchard Jerrold and his friend, Gustave Doré. Jerrold records that the project was initially conceived as a 'Pilgrimage through the Great World of London', starting with the pilgrims' arrival in England. The book evolved into representative scenes of 'the extremes of London life'. Now seen as a classic work, Doré's atmospheric depictions of the London poor are regularly used as illustrations of London life. However, while Doré made sketches in London, the final drawings were worked up in his studio in Paris, and he therefore relied on his memory for details.
The book was published in 1872 and this copy is dedicated to 'W.C. Watson Esq. With the Publisher's compliments, June 1874'.
