Archaeology — Middle Saxon; late 8th - mid-9th century
Animal remains, animal bone, sword guard
Half of an upper sword hilt guard made from bone. It has two flat faces made from two layers of bone riveted together. There is a slot for the tang of the sword. The side is decorated with four lines spaced to diguise the join between the two bone pieces. Anglo-Saxon swords were often fitted with hilts made of bone, antler or even wood. The hilts had guards to protect the hand. A lower hilt guard (ROP95[1318]<58>) was found on the same site and is possibly part of the same sword.
