Suffragette Vera Wentworth
Faded photograph of a woman standing outside a house, stuck to a piece of card. Beneath is written 'Vera Wentworth, 17.11.08'.
Vera Wentworth (1890-1957) joined suffragette organisation the Women's Social and Political Union in 1908 and worked for them in Plymouth. In September 1909, together with WSPU colleagues, she harassed the Prime Minister, Asquith, while he was staying in Lympne for the weekend, at church, on the golf course and by throwing stones at his window. Wentworth was imprisoned on many occasions for her suffragette activities, including participating in the WSPU's window smashing campaign of March 1912. She was forcibly fed while on hunger strike.
