Printed Ephemera — 1910
A suffragette taking part in a demonstration in Whitehall
The message on this placard suggests this lone protest by a Suffragette refers to the Conciliation Bill debated in the Parliamentary sessions of 1910. The bill that would have given limited female suffrage was supported by votes for women campaigners who mounted a series of demonstrations and processions to urge the government to pass the bill into law. Their campaign was not, however, successful.
The broad prison arrow at the top of the placard indicates that this Suffragette may have been previously imprisoned her involvement in the campaign. To avoid being arrested for obstruction she walks in the road and not on the pavement.
