La rue a Londres
An illustration from 'La Rue à Londres' written by the French socialist journalist and novelist Jules Valles, with illustrations by A.Lancan. Valles wrote about his experience of poverty on the streets of London having fled to England after being involved in the Commune of Paris in 1871, where he had edited France’s foremost socialist newspaper ‘Le Cri du Peuple’. The people in this image are described as ‘A household of Irish immigrants in a lodging house in Drury Lane’. The mother holds a baby on her lap and seems distressed, while the father looks sad.
