Printed Ephemera — 1909-1912
Postcard, photographic postcard
Postcard with photograph of suffragettes at the Cleveland by-election. A woman on the left holds a flag and there is a sign in the middle which reads 'Keep The Liberal Out'. Behind the women are images of the leaders of the Women's Social and Political Union, from left to right Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence, Emmeline Pankhurst and Christabel Pankhurst.
Although the Liberals were generally in favour of granting women the vote, they did not do so, partly out of concern that initial measures would mainly enfranchise supporters of their Conservative opponents, During election campaigns 'hit squads' of suffragettes would arrive in a constituency, hire the best public rooms and go to work immediately to try to keep the Liberals out of the House of Commons.
