"Jenny" (Mrs How Martyn), "That's Said a Purpose For Me to Kiss You Again"
Postcard with photographic image of Edith How Martyn in the role of 'Jenny' and a Miss Hodgson dressed as 'Granny'. Beneath is written: 'Jenny' (Mrs. How Martyn) 'That's Said A Purpose For Me to Kiss You Again' Women's Freedom League'.
Edith How Martyn (1875-1954) was joint Honorary Secretary of the WSPU with Charlotte Despard and was one of the earliest suffragettes to be imprisoned in Holloway in 1906. In 1907, in disagreement with WSPU tactics, How Martyn and Despard co-founded the Women's Freedom League. How Martyn was honorary secretary of the WFL until 1911, when she became head of the organisation's Political and Militant Department. In 1912 she resigned from the WSPU, disillusioned at its achievements. How Martyn stood as an independent candidate in the general election of 1918. She later devoted herself to the birth-control movement.
