Printed Ephemera — 1918
At Last!
Pro-female suffrage postcard commemorating the passing of the Representation of the People Act in 1918. Published by the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies, the postcard reproduces a cartoon by the artist Bernard Partridge originally published in Punch magazine on 23rd January 1918. Here the granting of limited female suffrage is celebrated through the depiction of a triumphant Joan of Arc holding aloft a banner marked 'Woman's Franchise'. The cartoon is captioned 'At Last!' with reference to the long campaign for female suffrage that was partially fulfilled with the passing of the Act.
Joan of Arc became the symbol of suffragette militancy from c.1909.
