Grace and Aethel Tollemache were sisters who were both members of the Women's Social and Political Union. Both spent time in Holloway Gaol for their suffragette activities. In 1911 Aethel was imprisoned for two weeks for breaking a window at the National Liberal Club. Grace participated in the WSPU window smashing campaign of March 1912 and was sentenced to two months' hard labour. In 1913 she became secretary of the Bath branch of the WSPU. Aethel undertook a hunger strike when imprisoned in Holloway in 1914 after participating in a deputation to the KIng.
