Printed Ephemera — 1909
"It will be a sad day for us when women get the vote"
Pro-female suffrage comic postcard illustrated with two 'talking heads' representing male establishment figures with the caption 'It will be a sad day for us when the women get the vote'.
This was one in a series of satirical postcards designed by Frederic G Dutton for the National Women's Social and Political Union Lancashire Headquarters based at 164 Oxford Road Manchester in 1909. Known as the 'exhibition' series it is probable they were originally published for sale at the Women's Exhibition held in Knightsbridge London in 1909. The sale of popular, comic postcards raised funds for the campaign and helped to spread the Votes for Women message by ridiculing the anti-suffrage argument and the injustice of the voting system.
