Printed Ephemera — 1908-1909
Mrs Pethick Lawrence
Postcard with photographic portrait of Emmeline Pethick Lawrence (1867-1954). There is a handwritten message on the back of the card: 'Manchester. I'm afraid that I have lost the post. I meant you to have had this in the morning. I wanted to have let your mother (?) know that I hope to be at the 'At-Home' at Queen's House at 3 o' clock tomorrow (Noon). I thought perhaps you & her could have come down.' The signature is illegible. The recipient Minnie Turner was a member of the Women's Social and Political Union and of the Tax Resistance League. She ran her home at Sea View, Victoria Road, Brighton as a boarding house specifically aimed at Suffragettes. Advertising in suffrage newspapers such as 'Votes for Women' she urged ‘Suffragettes spend your holidays in Brighton, central. Terms moderate.’
Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence (1867-1954) was Treasurer of the Women’s Social and Political Union. Together with her husband Frederick, she was also business manager of the organisation and edited its newspaper ‘Votes For Women’. As well as being a remarkable fund-raiser for the WSPU, she was arrested four times for her suffragette activities and served over four months in prison.
