Printed Ephemera — 1909
Mrs Pankhurst
Postcard with photographic portrait of Emmeline Pankhurst (1858-1928). Below is printed 'Mrs. Pankhurst. The National Women's Social and Political Union' and the address of the organisation. Handwritten on the back is the message 'Galashiels Tuesday Thanks for letters. Ask Mother how long I can stay. There are so few helpers here. I'm afraid I can't afford Charlie's camera. Love from Norah.' The card is addressed to 'Mr. D.C. Balls, c/o Lindsay, Gracie & Co., Quayside, Newcastle-on-Tyne'.
The postcard was probably sent by the Suffragette Norah Balls to her parents when campaigning for the WSPU during a Scottish by-election in 1912. Norah Balls was an active campaigner for the Women's Social and Political Union. Arrested three times for militancy she also travelled the country helping local branches campaigning at by-elections.
