Printed Ephemera — 1905-1914
Holloway Prison
Postcard with photograph captioned 'Holloway Prison', which from 1902 was a women's prison. This was where suffragettes who were jailed in London served their sentences.
On their release, suffragette prisoners would often process through the streets to a reception held in their honour. Militant suffragette organisations the Women’s Social and Political Union and the Women’s Freedom League presented members who served prison sentences with badges, brooches and medals to reward them for their devotion to the cause.
Many suffragettes were shocked at the treatment and living conditions inside prison, and campaigned for reform.
