Printed Ephemera — 1910-06-18
Postcard, photographic postcard
Suffragette 'From Prison to Citizenship Procession', 18 June 1910. The prisoner's procession depicted in the image formed part of a larger Suffragette procession, also known as the Great Procession of Women organised in support of the Conciliation Bill currently being debated in Parliament. At the head of the prisoner's procession, on horseback was the Suffragette leader General Flora Drummond followed by the colour bearer Charlotte Marsh and the WSPU Drum and Fife Band. The band introduced the Prisoners' Pageant of 617 Suffragettes who had served a term of imprisonment for militancy, dressed in white and carrying broad arrows - the emblems of their imprisonment marched behind a banner announcing '617 Imprisonments To Win Freedom For Women'. Up to 15,000 women marched from the Embankment to the Albert Hall to hear speeches from Suffragette leaders including Christabel Pankhurst.
