Printed Ephemera — 1911-07
Postcard, photographic postcard
'Press Carts' delivering 'Votes For Women', the Women's Social and Political Union newspaper, to pitches in central London. Women undertaking such 'unwomanly' and 'unsexing' activities as these made a strong, often unfavourable, impression on passers-by. In the first cart are Miss Shepperd (driving) and Princess Sophia Duleep Singh; in the second Mrs Haverfield (driving) and Mrs Robson and in the third Miss Douglas Smith and Lady Constance Lytton. The carriages stopped at theatres where matinees were being held for the selling of the Votes for Women newspaper to members of the audience.
The poster advertising this issue of the newspaper refers to Angelina Napolitano. She was a migrant to Canada who was sentenced to death for murdering her abusive husband. Members of the public could sign a petition asking for her to be pardoned at the WSPU's Clement's Inn headquarters. Napolitano was later sentenced to life imprisonment.
