Printed Ephemera — 1908
Mrs Pankhurst Arrested in Victoria Street. Feb. 13, 1908.
The arrest of the suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst, 1908. On 13th February 1908 Emmeline Pankhurst was arrested whilst on a deputation to the House of Commons, on the charge of obstructing a policeman. The following day she received a sentence of six weeks in Holloway Gaol, which on this occasion was served in full. The deputation had occured after a meeting at Caxton Hall, where it had been learnt that no mention of women's suffrage was to be made in the King's Speech. Mrs. Pankhurst can be seen carrying a scroll of paper on which was written the resolution of the meeting. She was also limping, following a injury sustained the previous month (at a Devon by-election) in an altercation with Liberal party supporters.
The publication of this image as a mass produced postcard represented huge public interest in the arrest of Emmeline Pankhurst and the militant campaign.
