Mary Squires the Gypsy who Stript Eliz Canning at Enfield Wash.
Elizabeth Canning was a maidservant who claimed she was abducted at Moorfields and imprisoned in a brothel for a month. A gypsy named Mary Squires, and the brothel owner Susannah Wells, were tried at the Old Bailey for the crime. Squires was sentenced to death and Wells to branding and jail. However, inconsistencies in Canning's evidence meant that Squires was finally pardoned. Canning was convicted of perjury instead, and transported to America. The case became a media sensation.
