Social History — 1977
Badge, porter's badge
The London Central Meat Market moved to its present site in Smithfield in 1977. It is London's largest wholesale meat and poultry market and proudly maintains many of its historic traditions.
Traditionally buyers operating in the market may purchase only as much meat as they themselves can carry. In the poultry market, porters may be employed to assist buyers. They either work for large retail companies, or are self-employed and hired on a casual basis.
The porters, nicknamed bummarees, must have a licence and are supplied with an identifying arm badge by the City Corporation. The badges are colour-coded by date, and this green badge would have been worn by a porter between 1977 and 1978.
