Printed Ephemera — 1910-1912
Photograph of Suffragette Charlotte Despard
Portrait of Charlotte Despard, taken by the female photographer Lena Connell and published by the International Suffrage Shop. In 1906 Charlotte Despard became joint Honorary Secretary for the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU). She advocated civil disobedience and militancy and was arrested after speaking at the Caxton Hall and was sentenced to 21 days in Holloway prison. By 1907 she and other members had broken away from the WSPU, discouraged by political differences with the Pankhursts, and had formed the Women’s Freedom League.
The International Suffrage Shop was opened by the suffragette Sime Seruya at 31 Bedford Street in 1910. In March 1911 the store moved to Adam Street in the Strand. Described as 'The Only Feminist Bookshop' it sold a range of feminist publications as well as postcards, posters and badges.
