Printed Ephemera — 1913
Florence Canning
Photographic portrait of the Suffragette Florence Canning. She is depicted holding a copy of The Suffragette newspaper dated 14 Nov 1913. Florence was arrested in 1908 for obstruction during a deputation to parliament for which she served a sentence in Holloway Prison.
On the reverse of the mount is handwritten, 'presented by Mrs Ernest Jones' The Suffragette Ellen Isabel Jones was associated with the portrait photographer Madame Yevonde (Yevonde Philone Middleton) who was also briefly involved with the campaign . It is possible this portrait of Florence was taken by Madame Yevonde soon after she set up her own studio at 92 Victoria Street, London, aged 21 having completed a three year apprenticeship with Lallie Charles.
Florence is recorded as one of the first tree planters at the Blathwayt's home in Bath in 1910-1911.
