Printed Ephemera — 1913-1914
Photograph of Suffragette Christine Adams
Photograph of Christine Adams, imprisoned in Holloway prison for her part in the Suffrage campaign. This photograph is likely to have been a surveillance photograph taken without her knowledge by the police. In September 1913 the Home Office ordered that photographs be taken of militant suffragettes. Amongst their other uses, these photographs were used by security staff working at Museums and Galleries in London as well as other cities. Militant suffragettes had been entering galleries and attacking prominent works of art and these photographs were used to identify women who were likely to cause trouble.
